Hypancistrus sp L236 breeding line Budrovcan/Schmidt 2015

Fish of L-No. 236 from the Iriri (a tributary of the Rio Xingu) are, according to current knowledge, most likely hybrids (definitely natural hybrids, like the majority of Hypancistrus from the Rio Xingu, see Evers, H.-G. 2021: Hypancistrus sp. L236 – a legend in the catfish hobby. Published by: Fish Magazine Taiwan). There are certainly many breeding lines/groups that are labelled as L236, but their origin is often not clearly documented. Of the few verifiable original imports, a breeding line was established by Robert Budrovcan, which was further selected by Ernst Schmidt. The animals in our breeding programme are offspring from the selection line of Ernst Schmidt, who published an article on this in AMAZONAS (Vol. 62, p. 60-63) in 2015.

In my breeding facility, I regularly have offspring from both the black-and-white and the black-and-yellow breeding lines, regardless of how the parents are coloured. This may be interpreted as an indication that this colour classification is not yet genetically fixed in my breeding stock.
