Hypancistrus sp (L28)
Black Hypancistrus with white spots very often come from the Orinoco catchment area, I am referring here above all to Hypancistrus contradens (L 201 Bigspot), H. inspector and many others. This is different with the angelfish Hypancistrus sp. L 28, which originates from the catchment area of the Rio Tocantins in north-east Brazil, which drains directly into the Atlantic at Belem. In 2020 I received three animals from an aquarist friend who had bought these fish in the trade as L 201, which they definitely are not.
With the help of Ingo Seidel, we were able to identify the animals as L 28. Even though I have already had several clutches from the 2 males and the female, I have not yet succeeded in breeding them because the male ate the eggs after 2-3 days. However, I am hopeful that this will work out one day.
