Application in aquaristics
The leaves and bark of the indian almond tree have been successfully used in aquariums for many years, e.g. to prevent spawn fungus, but also for the treatment and prophylaxis of other bacterial or fungal disease symptoms, such as fin rot and mucosa problems. The water in the aquarium hardly changes at all (pH is slightly lowered (at low KH), the total salt content slightly increased), after some time it gets a nice amber tone and remains crystal clear.
Other areas of application
Even if the active ingredients are not all known in detail, a slightly disinfecting and fungicidal effect could be proven for the leaves. In some tropical countries the brew of the indian almond leaves is used in humans to treat colic and nausea. The leaves are also said to have a cancer preventive effect due to the antioxidants they contain.
