Axolotl require a sufficient number of hiding places in their aquarium for their well-being.
They prefer relatively narrow caves where the animals can easily have body contact with the cave wall, which fulfils their need for security. Several axolotls also like to cavort in a cave, closely packed together and side by side.
Axolotl caves – sizes and shapes
Time and again, customers have told us (and we have also observed this ourselves) that there are virtually no suitable caves for tailed amphibians to be found in local pet shops. In most cases, the hiding places on offer are unsuitable in terms of shape and size and are often too sharp-edged for the animals’ sensitive skin.
We have therefore made it our mission to produce species-appropriate and, above all, safe hiding dens for axolotls. As there is no ‘standard animal’ in the ‘standard size’, you will find axolotl caves in all possible sizes, for small/young animals right up to the ‘axo monster’. If you still can’t find a suitable cave, please get in touch with us, we can make (almost) anything possible and build you a suitable hiding place.
What’s important for the animals is the size/shape that is suitable and comfortable for them, they probably don’t care about the appearance. For the owner, on the other hand, it certainly makes a difference whether he is looking at half a terracotta-coloured flower pot in the living room basin or something more visually appealing. That’s why we have a large and constantly growing selection for your water dragons – and you’ll be spoilt for choice… 😉
Whether simple straight tunnels with or without surface texture, igloos, curved tunnels, tunnels with several entrances, igloo caves in the shape of duck bellies, turtle shells, Easter eggs, stones, snails, killer shells or a pumpkin – there should be something for everyone 🙂
You have almost as much choice when it comes to the colour scheme: depending on the model, there are 5 to 10 different colour variants. Not quite as bad as in front of the yoghurt shelf in the supermarket, but if you’re creative, you can’t avoid it…
All axolotl caves were and are developed in co-operation with keepers and breeders of these animals.
We attach great importance to injury-free surfaces and entrances for all items that we offer for axolotls.
Even before firing, all axolotl caves are reworked by hand after a few days of drying to remove any corners or edges. A further check is carried out after the firing.
And last but not least, we feel the piece to be packed again for possible imperfections.
If, despite these careful checks, we have missed something, because we are only human, we can help ourselves with an iron file or similar. As a rule, however, no reworking by you is necessary.
Cleaning – Disinfection
Our caves are fired at around 1100 °C and are therefore hard and heat-resistant. Should this be desired or necessary, the axolotl caves can easily be boiled or placed in the oven at high heat for disinfection purposes.
Unwanted algae growth can be easily scrubbed off with a strong brush.
Axolotl caves – surfaces with pattern
So that the single-coloured versions are not quite so ‘boring’, the surfaces are hand-decorated with a pattern, the multi-coloured ones are already eye-catching enough without one :-).
If you do not wish to have a surface pattern on your caves, simply indicate this in the comments field when placing your order. The delivery time is then approx. 9 to 30 working days, depending on the item, because the caves are then made especially for you without a pattern. Large caves and those with thicker walls always require a longer drying time than smaller and thinner ones.
AquaKeramik offers the clay colours Camouflage (black/red/white) and Navy (black/white), which are unique in this colour pattern design and quality. The clay colours are manually mixed, beaten and milled several times in an elaborate process. In this way, a new grain is created again and again from the different clay colours. A special firing programme at almost 1100 °C gives these models their special and unique appearance.
