Coconut panicle – a decorative alternative to aquarium roots – ideal for biotope aquariums
Coconut panicles are the dried inflorescences of the coconut palm (Cocos nucifera) and, with their numerous branches, provide a natural hiding place for numerous aquatic inhabitants. The panicle branches spread out in the water so that invertebrates such as shrimps can find a place to hide here, as can numerous species of fish.
Coconut panicles are a real eye-catcher and a great design object for biotope aquariums.
They are untreated and free from harmful oils or toxic substances that could have a negative effect on the water or the animals in the aquarium. On the contrary, the valuable tannins and humic substances they contain slightly acidify the water and give it the amber colour preferred in natural aquariums.
Invertebrates such as shrimps or crayfish find a three-dimensional playground and grazing area here. The richly branched inflorescences serve as shelter and hiding places for fish.
As with all wood in the aquarium, the coconut panicle should be washed before use and watered if necessary (if you don’t want it to be so amber-coloured). And like any wood, the coco panicle will still be floating at the beginning, so it is advisable to weigh it down at first.
Our coconut panicles are usually between 50 and 70 cm long, the length of most pieces is around 60 cm. If this is too long for you, you can shorten the panicles as required. They should therefore be suitable for use in almost any aquarium (but perhaps not in nano tanks…😉)
